This is a 12K event which replaces the popular long-standing Roman 9 road race, using mostly the same course.
Ideal race at a quiet time for races early in the New Year to 'kick-start' training for London Marathon and other Spring races. Due to limited parking facilities, and for safety considerations on the course, there is a limit of 700 with no entries on the day.
The race starts and finishes at Mary Arden's House - by kind permission of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, which cares for the Shakespeare Houses. The race goes through the village of Wilmcote and follows a route to the edge of Aston Cantlow, along Mill Lane, Wood Lane, Wilmcote Lane to Aston Holdings and back up the hill to the village and Mary Arden's House.
The course is an accurately measured six miles and the race has a Road Race permit issued by Midland Counties Athletic Association.
The race is part of the Warwickshire Road Race League and will attract entrants from various athletic clubs. However, we would like to emphasise that it is open to entrants of all abilities, and newcomers to the sport are guaranteed a warm welcome and lots of encouragement from Stratford upon Avon Athletic Club, the marshals positioned around the course and the residents of Wilmcote.
We would especially welcome entries from Wilmcote residents and we award a prize to the first Male and Female Wilmcote runner to finish.
The race is a 100 mile relay of 10 legs of approximately 10 miles each. To qualify for the main trophy, teams must consist of 10 runners (male, female or mixed) each completing one 10 mile leg. The route starts from the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon at various times in the early morning (main race 7am) with a view to completing the course by about 5.30 – 6.00pm the same day.
It is possible for a team to split legs amongst more runners, but then that team is not eligible for the main trophy. There are also trophies for teams starting at 5.00am and 6.00am, a ladies only team trophy and a memento for each runner taking part.
The route is circuitous around the Cotswolds using country lanes as far as possible, but inevitably some main roads have to be negotiated, so there are safety issues to consider. Each runner has to be responsible for his/her own safety, since due to the nature of the event there are no marshals or First Aid facilities available. As the name of the race implies, it is quite hilly in places, with some legs being notoriously difficult.
Route instructions and maps are issued beforehand, and although the route is marked with small arrows at each turning point, it is each runner’s responsibility to negotiate the route successfully. Teams generally support each other in cars or minibus, driving round the course to drop runners for the start of their leg and picking up at the end etc.
This is our annual off-road race. The Wobbler is a 2 lap race of approximately 10k, while the Welcombe Trembler is just 1 lap of approximately 5k
Both races are run over a hilly course designed to “test the best and challenge the rest”
Race headquarters are at Stratford Leisure Centre, with showers, changing and prize-giving.
The run takes place on the Recreation Ground and totals approx. 2 miles, making it an achievable distance for young and old alike. The course is across grass and hard paths and is marshalled by Athletic Club members. All finishers receive a commemorative medal, and drinks are available for all.
As an added incentive to make the morning a true family occasion full of healthy activity, Stratford Leisure and Visitor Centre offer free child swims on the day (one paying adult per two children if under the age of 8yrs) on production of race numbers at reception.
