Shakespeare competition

The aim is to provide friendly rivalry throughout the year by a series of competitive races. Members are placed in divisions, with promotion and relegation respectively for the top and bottom three in each division. With a race nearly every month, it adds extra interest and stimulus to club nights, or runs. Club members volunteer to organise the races themselves, and are asked to provide information via the noticeboard at least two weeks in advance (date, venue, start time, route description and/or map if possible and parking arrangements if necessary).

The races may start from the Sports Club, or preferably further afield, so providing different routes that members would not normally be familiar with. Extra interest is created by those more imaginative race organisers who think up unusual events such as handicap races, point to point, multi-terrain, treasure hunts, out and back, biathlon, cross-country etc. A finish recording sheet is provided to record the results (positions and times) together with a list of current club members to note who has paid the entry fee.

In the past, the ladies have had a raw deal against the men in terms of points scoring. It is not really practical to organise a completely separate ladies division due to the low numbers, so the system of awarding 1st place points to first lady, 2nd place points to second lady etc. (tried for the first time during the 1999 season) is currently used.

Race organisers automatically receive extra points to encourage members to organise races, and in recognition of their contribution to the competition (see separate rules).

Prizes

Over the course of a year, there are usually ten races, of which the best 8 scores are counted. A trophy is awarded for the overall winners of Division 1, together with prizes for the top two places in each Division, both men and women.

The race programme for the current year is listed separately. Races arranged against other local clubs will count towards the competition.

Thank you to all club members who volunteer to organise a race. If you have not yet organised a race, then please consider doing so. After all, without the help of club members, this competition would not take place at all.


Grand Prix competition

The competition consists of 14 events throughout the year taken from 5k or multi-terrain up to full marathons. The Grand Prix secretary carries out the selection of these events. Members may compete in as many races as they wish, with their best 8 races counting in the competition. Points are awarded according to where club members finish relative to each other. Club colours must be worn to all events to qualify for points.

Scoring

Points are scored based on position compared to other SAC athletes:

Your score is then adjusted based on age (at 1st Jan) and sex:

A club member achieving a personal best performance in any of the nominated races will be awarded 4 additional points.

A club runner breaking an existing club record in any of the nominated races will be awarded 6 additional points.


Warwick Road Race League (WRRL)

The league is organised by the Warwickshire County Athletic Association (WCAA). It consists of 8 races. The best of 6 count towards the team prizes, whilst the best of 5 count towards the individual prizes.
